Fact Sheet Proposal

The following information will assist when composing and submitting a proposal for a new fact sheet using the form below. Each proposal will undergo a review and editing process to ensure fact sheets accepted for publication meet the standards of Washington State University CAHNRS Extension.

  • The fact sheet title describes the plant and pest, weed, common problem, natural enemy, vertebrate or pollinator.
  • See current fact sheets for examples.

  • Identify the primary category for this proposed fact sheet.
    • On the proposal form, choose from:
      • Ornamentals (These are the bulbs, flowers, non-fruit trees and shrubs)
      • Tree Fruits (soft and hard fruit plus nuts)
      • Small Fruits (strawberries, raspberries, grapes, etc.)
      • Vegetables (root vegetables, lettuces, squashes, melons, etc.)
      • Lawn and Turf (diseases and insects affecting home lawns)
      • Vertebrates (mice, deer, moles, voles, etc.)
      • Weeds (plants that grow relentlessly where they aren’t desired)
      • Common Problems (generic problems. non-plant specific)
      • Natural Enemies (these are insect the prey on plant pests)
      • Pollinators (bees, wasps, butterflies, some predators, parasitoids and birds)
      • Other (Select other if proposing a new category.)

  • Is the proposed fact sheet for a “Natural Enemy”? (Y/N)
    • Natural enemies are parasitic and predatory insects which help control undesirable insects. Some examples are Bee flies, Chalcid wasps, Lady beetles, and Praying mantids.
    • Name the prey or pest targeted.

  • Is the proposed fact sheet for a Weed (Y/N)
  • List the following:
    • Weed Plant Family (scientific name)
    • Weed Life Cycle (i.e. annual, perennial, bi-annual)
    • Weed Plant type (grass, broadleaf)
    • Weed habitat (where is this plant typically found)
  • For the following, what chemical control herbicide active ingredients are recommended. List UNKOWN if none are being proposed. 
    • in Landscape areas (gardens)
    • in Turf areas (lawns)
    • in Bare ground areas

  • Describe the biology of the pest, weed or beneficial under consideration.
    • For pests (diseases and insects)
      • Visual description
      • Symptoms
      • Life cycle
    • For Weeds
      • Visual description
      • Growth habit
    • For Beneficials (pollinators and natural enemies)
      • Visual description
      • Life cycle

  • Describe non-chemical control measures.

  • Describe chemical control measures and special considerations.
    • List examples of any known, Washington State approved pesticides.
    • List does not need to be all inclusive.

  • Up to 4 images of up to 4MB in size may be uploaded.
    • Submitters attest to ownership of submitted photos or have written consent from photographer for the use and publishing of these photos. Optionally, photos may be open-source if attribution is made to the appropriate open-source license, i.e. Creative Commons or Educational Use licensing. Proof of attribution will be requested prior to publishing photographs on the Hortsense website.
    • Add a brief description of the photo which can serve as a caption.
    • Provide attribution of the photo.
    • Type, size and resolution recommendations
      • File types – .jpg and .webp preferred.
      • Resolution – 500px minimum W x H (1024 x 1024 preferred).
      • Size – 4MB maximum.
